The design of retirement programs is a design of programs for the elderly, who are more often women, because women live longer and because their work histories often lead to reduced levels of pension and social security benefits.

Description: This concurrent session took place at the 1975 Society of Actuaries Spring Meeting in New York, held in April. The presenters addressed various aspects of agency compensation and consumerism including the objectives of a compensation system, the services performed by the agent, how consumers view agent compensation, how the commission structure affects an agent’s advice, the impact of inflation on agents’ earnings, possible improvements to agent compensation, and regulation of “fair value” of insurance.

Description: The 2020 ERISA Advisory Council of the Department of Labor had a project on Considerations for Recognizing and Addressing Participants with Diminished Capacity. I delivered testimony to the ERSIA Advisory Council on this topic in September 2020. This article summarizes some key points from the testimony and also offers ideas for how employers can help employees and retirees deal with these issues. There are two different audiences that employers deal with as a result of diminished capacity – the individuals whose capacity is diminished, and those who help them.
